Most important issue: As the only proven progressive , DFL- and labor-endorsed candidate in this election, I will use peace as my guiding principle. I want our troops out of Iraq now. Health care shouldn’t be a perk, but a right. Our children’s inheritance should be a healthy environment, not a burdensome national debt to fund tax cuts for a wealthy few. The Fifth District deserves a leader who won’t shrink from Minnesota’s proud progressive traditions but embraces and lives by them. I have been that leader in the Legislature and will continue to be that leader as a congressman from Minnesota.
Views: Candidates were asked to respond to statements on five policy issues. They were given seven options: "Strongly agree", "Somewhat agree", "Have mixed feelings", "Somewhat disagree", "Strongly disagree", "Have no opinion" and "Do not wish to respond."
Congress should insist that the United States begin withdrawing troops from Iraq in 2007. Strongly agree
Congress should pass a law that strengthens enforcement against employers who hire illegal immigrants. Strongly agree
A portion of the federal tax cuts enacted starting in 2001 should be repealed to help balance the federal budget. Strongly agree
The U.S. Constitution should be amended to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Strongly disagree
The federal government should further regulate emissions from cars, trucks and other motor vehicles to slow global warming. Strongly agree
