Published Monday, October 27 04:01:29 PM
Office:Minnesota District 16B State representative

Other candidates in this race:

Party: DFL
Incumbent: No
City of residence: Big Lake
Age:48
Background: Steve Andrews is an independent-minded DFLer who will bring real-world experience and common sense to the state Capitol. He and his wife, Mary, live in Big Lake Township with their two sons.
Endorsements:Education Minnesota; Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA); Democrats for Life of Minnesota; Service Employees International Union (SEIU); International Union of Operating Engineers (49ers); Boilermakers Union Local 647; Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE).
Most important issue: It's time to fundamentally change the way business is done at the state Capitol because partisan food-fights, politically expedient half-measures and perpetual election campaigns are failing the people of Minnesota. We're never going to improve our schools, fix our transportation mess or lower property taxes if we continue to allow the same old people to produce the same old results. I'm running for the State House because talk is cheap. My neighbors in Sherburne County deserve a representative who understands that no party has a monopoly on good ideas. I'm ready to work to find common ground and deliver results.

In light of high gasoline prices, the Legislature should repeal the gas tax increases enacted in February. Strongly disagree
The state should require cities to allow law enforcement officers to inquire about people's immigration status during routine police work, such as traffic stops. Have mixed feelings
Legislators should rule out tax increases during the next session. Have mixed feelings
The state should put a cap on tuition increases at state colleges and universities and pressure the University of Minnesota to do the same. Strongly agree
The state should provide more funding for K-12 education, even if it means reductions in other areas of the state budget or raising taxes. Strongly agree
