| Most important issue: | The so-called racial acheivement gap reflects the quality of education to which students have access. Nationwide, two-thirds of new teachers work in schools where black students are over-represented. And 40 percent of teachers quit teaching by the end of their third year. My priorities: Bring teacher turnover rates to low levels in all schools. End the practice of sending layoff notices to far more teachers than necessary to carry out a workforce reduction, a cost-containment strategy which drives up teacher turnover rates. A college-bound curriculum for the general student population, phase out watered-down curriculum tracks. | |
